PFLAG Columbia-Howard County presented its 13th annual scholarship in May to Katherine Hutchinson of Anne Arundel County, MD. Katherine was presented a $2,000 scholarship that will help her study at University of Rhode Island.
Katherine has been very active in her high school’s Sexuality and Gender Association, as Vice President for the past two years and as a member since her freshman year. She is also a key player in her high school’s Student Government Association, has an outstanding academic record, and is talented in the performing arts.
Katherine has shown courage, passion, determination and thoughtfulness in identifying and addressing problems experienced by members of the LGBTQ+ community in her high school. This has led to a greater understanding and acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals. These contributions extend to her broader community, as well. Katherine’s approach to ensuring respect and equal treatment of the LGBTQ+ community is well-summarized in her statement, ”Fighting and protesting while important to call attention to the issue, is not as successful in
gathering allies as educating people.” One of her mentors affirms Katherine’s approach, stating that Katherine opens others’ minds and hearts to understanding and acceptance for all people, especially LGBTQ+ members.
We look forward to Katherine’s many future roles as a leader, creating inclusive communities and advancing LGBTQ+ goals wherever she goes.
