PFLAG Columbia-Howard County presented its 12th annual scholarship in May to Marybeth Spargo of Finksburg, MD. Marybeth was presented a $2,000 scholarship that will help her continue her studies at Washington College.

In addition to being a well-rounded student, Marybeth is an LGBTQ champion, role model,
and leader in a conservative high school, located in a conservative county. This has been
challenging for her and has inspired her to create safe space and a solid sense of community
for those who are LGBTQ. She has accomplished this through serving as Vice President and
President of the LGBTQ Issues Club at her high school, working with other groups in the school
to address LGBTQ concerns and raising awareness in the community.

She would like to pursue a career in writing for TV and movies. She wants to influence change
and portray diverse individuals in stories so that people can see themselves reflected positively.
Marybeth says, "At the end of the day, all any of us want is to be happy, unafraid, and free to be
ourselves."
